My future is…loading, please wait. Next year, I will…loading, please wait. I can’t wait until I graduate, then I’ll…loading, please wait. Hopefully I figure this out soon.

Hey eyes had a haunted quality, shadowed and hollow, like looking into an empty room through a dark window. She blinked and turned away.

Something about being picked, being the one. I want to be that choice fruit you lift from the display, that perfect shirt that stands out on the rack, that left turn you make instead of right. Instead, I’m the bruised fruit at the back of the shelf, the ripped sweater hidden behind the scarves, the right turn that is shadowed, slightly less…[Read more]

  • Emma commented on the post, miraculous 5 years, 2 months ago

There was nothing miraculous about how she had survived. She hadn’t meant to live. So she didn’t consider it a miracle that she had lived. Everyone had been so happy and alive when they had pulled her out of the water. They all thought it was an accident. She had only felt hollow. Like something had been removed from her chest and left a gaping…[Read more]

She tucked the flashlight under her chin and slipped her slender fingers into the crack between the window panes. The window slid open noiselessly. Perfect. She slid into the house and followed the directions she had memorized. Second door on the right, staircase up a level, third door on the left. She pushed the door open, which swung on silent…[Read more]

The stems are bare, reaching to the sky with tiny claws. The petals have all fallen away, the leaves have been stripped. Eager for spring, the roses burst into life, only to be stung by a sudden and jealous frost. Left withered and crumpled, the black stalks with their thorns and spikes stand alone, pointless and ugly and tough.

She slapped him across the face, then stepped back in horror when his eyes jumped open in surprise. He had managed to pull her down to his level. He watched her hand in shock. She had never hit him before. She didn’t know why he was so surprised. He hit her enough that this should have happened long ago. She turned around and walked away.

There is a shaking, a quaking, a crumbling. She is collapsing, folding, stumbling. There is nothing left and no one to help. She watches stars wheel out of sight. She vanishes into the night.

A pale flash of a child perched on a grandfather’s knee, smiling and fingers sticky with sugar. A bright brown photo of a tree taken from the ground and looking skyward, the same child, now older and taller, swinging from a branch, frozen mid-laugh. A slightly blurry photo of a girl and a guy with their arms around each other, a corsage on her…[Read more]

There is a breeze in the trees, and a calm squirrel that scurries across the ground. I am in a lake of green and yellow and brown as summer approaches and the sun rises. I am wondering where all this serenity came from and why it wasn’t here when I needed it.

  • Emma commented on the post, native 5 years, 6 months ago

She wasn’t native to the cold. Her warm eyes peeked out from under here knit hat, her face was buried in a bright blue scarf. Her nose, which wasn’t protected from the wind and blowing snow, was bright red and she kept wrinkling it against the cold. Her hair was light, turned even lighter by the sunlight and heat she was so used to, and braided,…[Read more]

“We aren’t interested in whatever you’re selling.” The woman said roughly, making to close the door.
I stuck my foot in the door frame. “I’m sorry, but I’m not selling anything. I’m here to see Harry Williams?”
The woman shook her head. “You’re certainly insistent. I’ll go get him.” She turned back to the house. “Harry!” She shouted over her…[Read more]

  • Emma commented on the post, rewrite 5 years, 9 months ago

She was rewriting her life. She had uprooted and moved herself halfway across the country; to the godforsaken state of Oregon from the thriving and vivid Colorado. She was going to start over. First she needed an apartment. And a job. And some quick and easy way to erase twenty two years of memories.

The trees floated over the sand, shifting and fading. Sara crawled towards them, praying that they weren’t merely a mirage. The sand was hot and dry and Sara’s tongue was sandpaper against her lips. The trees were closer, gaining substance and becoming more defined. Trees meant water. Thank God.

And there goes my world again. Spinning in the crazy orbital he manages to yank everything into. I don’t know how to feel or what to think. One minute he’s perfect and laughing and I love him. And the next he’s detached and hurt and I love him. He makes me crazy. He has the power to flip my world upside down and I hate it. But I allow it.

They were beautiful: full and colorful and shiny in the sunlight. They were smooth and cool, despite sitting in almost-direct sun. She carefully pulled the ready-to-be-eaten peppers off the plant and carried them inside, already excited for dinner.

  • Emma commented on the post, stealth 6 years ago

She was stealth. She was cunning. She was beauty. She was all things silent and deadly. She stepped through the trees on silent feet, the mouth parted and eyes alert. There. In the bushes. A rabbit, frozen and quiet, it’s tiny heartbeat racing. She lunged and snapped up the rabbit. A victory in the wolf’s hunt.

  • Emma commented on the post, backlit 6 years ago

She flipped her long hair over her shoulder with a flick of her hand. She was backlit and appeared to glow with some sort of inner beauty. Her bright eyes and gentle smile shone even though her face was in shadow. He reached for her hand, amazed when she reached for his in return. How had he managed to deserve something so beautiful?

  • Emma commented on the post, instant 6 years ago

In an instant, her world had changed. That split second, two cars colliding, two lives vanishing, had changed everything. She hadn’t realized how much she had taken for granted. But she now realized that everything could end in an instant. And change forever.
