    Major points. That’s all that was at stake. Arlee didn’t need points, she needed a way out. This place was dismal on its best day. If points were shovels, or better yet, explosives, she’d work at earning them in a heartbeat. It wouldn’t even really be work. She could beat these other yahoos hands down.

    Middle. Of. The. Night. That’s when I woke up to someone bustling around my room. I opened my eyes, propped myself up on my elbow to see what was happening. My sister was running around the room like a mad person, grabbing everything in sight and packing it into a suticase.

    He emptied his savings. Every last penny. It was worth it to him though. She was worth it. Having her by his side meant everything. Not having her at his side…well, he might as well face death himself if he couldn’t have her by his side. He loved her. He hoped she felt the same.

    She had an overt sense of responsibility, that girl. Always looking out for her parents and her friends. She took it too far one day. A stranger showed up. He seemed harmless and helpless, and she just couldn’t let him fend for himself.

    I don’t know how I can sustain this level of sadness without cracking. It’s an inevitable part of life. Unavoidable. All I can do is keep my eyes up and remind myself of who I am and where I’m going.
