Daria recognized the skirt instantly, almost felt the heavy scratchy wool fabric on the tips of her fingers, the cold of that foggy morning twenty years ago on her face as she opened the door, still struggling with the zipper. The lining on the inside of my favorite purse is torn. I guess you could say that it’s from how often I use it, but I’d say it’s probably because I have a nervous habit of picking at it when I find myself alone in public settings.
My question is, why is optimism a “silver lining” in the cloud? What happened to gold? Is optimism not good enough for gold? Gold lining seems to imply a higher value, if you ask me. Or how about a platinum lining? See, here’s the thing about silver – it tarnishes and needs to be cleaned repeatedly. If optimism tarnishes so easily, then what’s the point of the lining at all?

But occasionally something good will come out of that, and I think that’s a beautiful thing. It’s important that we always see the bright side, because what kind of life would we be living if we never saw the silver linings?

The silver lining on clouds as they prepare to release torrents of rain down on the land below are pretty. It’s always been that way, sipping tea and watching the rain clouds get closer, until they were upon the house and rain droplets were hitting the window as the people outside rushed to get home or find shelter until the storm passed.

I touched the satin lining of the feather comforter, revelling in it’s luxuriousness. I ran my fingers along the strands of thread woven together to create the smoothest of surfaces, shining in the new morning light.
The lining of the pillow is soft against my cheek. But the things just a few centimeters away, hidden just inches away behind a wall of flesh, muscle, sinew and bone — the things in there are not soft, oh no. And they do not help me sleep.
