Standing at the ship, watching the ship. She watched them and their sails and she waited until they reached the horizon and dipped down underneath it, and then she turned and said, “There.”
Just that, “there,” and I was angry at her because she did not cry as I wanted to. The tears clogged my throat because my hopes and my dreams had gone with that ship, but all she could say was “there.”
Later I learned that was the only word she could say. I heard her crying all that night.
The battle against them had lasted seven endless years. Like a bad tempered ocean increasing momentum with time, it had pushed them over, then under and under again and again.
Each fragile attempt to resurface and live was met with resistance. More more threats, more charges, more demands, more legal fees and court appearances. But there came a day when delirious from the struggle, they were surprised to realise they were standing. Upright and free.

Standing in the corner of the house was my father’s favorite chair. It was there in that corner that my father thought me about the things of life, that meant the world to him.

Her breath seemed to freeze in between her mouth and the world beyond. It was only a few moments before she exhaled fully. Miniscule water droplets hung in the air, lovingly caressing the vastness like a lover waking in the middle of the night before spreading too far to be seen. As the last bit of breath faded from her lips, she pursed them and walked away.
I’m still standing. Standing, right in the middle of a charred, black circle where the grass smolders and the blood smells like a fresh barbecue beneath my right eye. To my right, the fallen. To my left, the struggling. In front of me, those bystanders who gape with unbelieving eyes, seeing the trident dangle from my nearly limp fingers. Nearly limp, exhausted fingers.

His face was weathered and the flakes touching his face seemed to instantly vaporize as it contacted his skin like forbidden territory. He looked up, catching my eye and responding with anger instantly. Gruff expletives spewed from his mouth, lips contorted by the cold. He abruptly left his tattered chair nestled against the garbage bin, brushing his shoulder against the peeling paint and propelling green chips into the air around him in an awkward rusty confetti. Growling, he was down the alley and swallowed by the darkness before I could utter the word “father.”
It doesn’t feel like I’m standing on my own two feet, although that’s what everyone keeps telling me — my parents, my employers, the loaners calling to collect money I just don’t have for them. I probably spent it on books, booze or a cheap, quick dinner. I often say that it feels like I’m just trying to keep my head above water. There we were. Just standing together. I longed to speak to her, to know her name, to know her story. I didn’t know anything, but I wanted to know everything. You know when people have those eyes that you just get lost in. You want to know everything they have seen, everything they have felt.
“COME ON, JUST SHOOT ME!” he screamed. “I’M THE LAST ONE STANDING, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? FINISH THE JOB, TAKE US ALL OUT, SHOOT! /SHOOT! SHOOT ME!”/
It wasn’t what he had been expecting. A standing ovation was a given, they had told him. Yet, as silence continued to hang oppressively over the concert hall, he felt a lump migrate into his throat and sweat begin to gather on his upper lip and forehead.
I am standing.
I have spent my life standing.
Waiting.
Standing for what.
I do not know.
I stand when I am on the subway.
I stand in the hallway.
I stand when I am tired, anyways.
It is the only way I know.

He got to his feet, and began pacing. He considered sitting down again, but his feet itched movement. She was with him. HIM. He buried his head in his arms, but stayed standing.
I could see every bit of hurt I had caused reflecting in his blue eyes. “I am so sorry,” I mustered. How could I apologize for all the lies I had told him. I could only hang my head in shame at the man who stood standing in front of me, broken and beaten down because of all my selfishness. Now that the dust had settled, everything was clear and I could see how I had been so completely wrong about everything.
My knees shake but I’m standing. I feel a rush of cool air sliding into my lungs. I feel bigger, stronger. Like I’m untouchable. I laugh, the impact on my chest jerking me backwards. Will puts his hand on the small of my back. “Hey hey hey,” he says, lifting me a little, “Take it easy.”
Old me would have pushed him hand away, said something snappy and started walking without thought. Now, I indulge in the comfort of him being so close, supporting me. “I want to run, I want to jump, I want to go,” I whine.
The statues were of two standing figures, each robed and hooded. The faces of these statues, like those of the rest of the statues in the graveyard, had their faces hidden in their cowls. It was keeping with tradition of his culture, that the face of the statues would not be visible, for if a stone face existed, a restless soul might become trapped in the human like figure.
I wake with a small throbbing at the back of my head. I can’t see anything. I shift, and feel someone next to me. Will, enveloped in a white spotlight. He’s already awake, smiling down at me. I must have been sleeping on his shoulder. “You okay?” he asks. I nod and the pounding courses around me. I grimace.
“Are you kidding? She’s not okay,” a voice says. It’s Rory, standing in front of us, arms crossed. His glasses are gone, making him look older. And, I’ll admit it, handsomer. “She’s a big girl. She can make a judgement of herself, I think,” Rick says suddenly appearing next to Rory.
My heart starts pound in my throat. No, this can’t be happening
she stood quietly beneath the street lamp. it’s dark here, as the snow falls down around her. her hair lays coiled beneath a warm scarf she wrapped around herself – not even the knit can keep her warm – little puffs of hot air make the snowflakes in front of her face dance. who’s she waiting for? nobody’s coming for miles, and yet there she stands.
She was standing on the platform, watching the train go around the hill, out of sight. It had been seven years since she last saw him, and his sudden return was a surprise, but there was no place for him in her life now, too much had changed. The train was gone, and silence fell on the valley. Once again, she was alone.
I’m standing in the middle trying not to fall backward or forward but if i do that then i am not moving and if i am not moving i will go no where. This is the delema. Should I continue to move or should he i stay still and no longer challenge fate.
standing here, alone, waiting, wishing, hoping, praying. to the moon and back, to the galaxies without names. to the wild wind trapped in the mountains i’ve yet to visit, to the oceans with no life. i am standing, waiting, wondering when you will be mine.
Strong men, women, children. All ages, races, beliefs. They all are there, standing tall. They don’t take shit from anyone, anything. They are brave, fearless, always there.
I was standing on the rood and fell. THe thing about standing is it is hard, to stand your ground and stay still. TO stand your gaurd and never let your attention go. To stand on two legs working to stand still.

Standing at the ship, watching the ship. She watched them and their sails and she waited until they reached the horizon and dipped down underneath it, and then she turned and said, “There.”
Just that, “there,” and I was angry at her because she did not cry as I wanted to. The tears clogged my throat because my hopes and my dreams had gone with that ship, but all she could say was “there.”
Later I learned that was the only word she could say. I heard her crying all that night.
The battle against them had lasted seven endless years. Like a bad tempered ocean increasing momentum with time, it had pushed them over, then under and under again and again.
Each fragile attempt to resurface and live was met with resistance. More more threats, more charges, more demands, more legal fees and court appearances. But there came a day when delirious from the struggle, they were surprised to realise they were standing. Upright and free.
And now they were going to kick Helen’s arse.
I love going into London but I don’t like trains. Especially the tube – horrible being underground and there is standing room only.

Standing in the corner of the house was my father’s favorite chair. It was there in that corner that my father thought me about the things of life, that meant the world to him.
One can’t help but stand in awe of his standing. A good standard he has set. His record stands. They stand in the stands.
Standing isn’t the best thing to be doing, if you think about it. It hurts. It’s aggravating. And really, what the hell are you doing? It doesn’t benefit you in any way to just stand there and look at the scenery. You have to look. You have to walk. You can’t just live your life in one stance.
Standing is something that we learn to do. As a child physically, and as an adult metaphorically. Some find it easy to stand, others find it difficult. Standing by yourself may be difficult to do by yourself.

Standing on the ledge of a building, I look down at the ruthless world below me. I see strangers bumbling through crowds like they’re the only person there.

Her breath seemed to freeze in between her mouth and the world beyond. It was only a few moments before she exhaled fully. Miniscule water droplets hung in the air, lovingly caressing the vastness like a lover waking in the middle of the night before spreading too far to be seen. As the last bit of breath faded from her lips, she pursed them and walked away.
I’m still standing. Standing, right in the middle of a charred, black circle where the grass smolders and the blood smells like a fresh barbecue beneath my right eye. To my right, the fallen. To my left, the struggling. In front of me, those bystanders who gape with unbelieving eyes, seeing the trident dangle from my nearly limp fingers. Nearly limp, exhausted fingers.
They cannot believe I am still standing. They cannot believe that I have won.
I was standing in the parking lot, watching. The old man before me looked so lost, so worn, so cold. The snow clung to him hungrily. His face was weathered and the flakes touching his face seemed to instantly vaporize as it contacted his skin like forbidden territory. His hair and blanket had no such powers of resistance providing an endless supply of places for the crystalline forest to nest and grow into a freezing carpet.
He looked up, catching my eye and responding with anger instantly. Gruff expletives spewed from his mouth, lips contorted by the cold. He abruptly left his tattered chair nestled against the garbage bin, brushing his shoulder against the peeling paint and propelling green chips into the air around him in an awkward rusty confetti. Growling, he was down the alley and swallowed by the darkness before I could utter the word “father.”
The world was spinning all around me, but he was standing right there in front of me. Should I go to him, or lose him forever?
It doesn’t feel like I’m standing on my own two feet, although that’s what everyone keeps telling me — my parents, my employers, the loaners calling to collect money I just don’t have for them. I probably spent it on books, booze or a cheap, quick dinner. I often say that it feels like I’m just trying to keep my head above water. That’s a very different image from “standing on my own two feet.”

I could see every bit of hurt I had caused reflecting in his blue eyes. “I am so sorry,” I mustered. How could I apologize for all the lies I had told him. I could only hang my head in shame at the man who stood standing in front of me, broken and beaten down because of all my selfishness. Now that the dust had settled, everything was clear and I could see how I had been so completely wrong about everything.

The statues were of two standing figures, each robed and hooded. The faces of these statues, like those of the rest of the statues in the graveyard, had their faces hidden in their cowls. It was keeping with tradition of his culture, that the face of the statues would not be visible, for if a stone face existed, a restless soul might become trapped in the human like figure.
I wake with a small throbbing at the back of my head. I can’t see anything. I shift, and feel someone next to me. Will, enveloped in a white spotlight. He’s already awake, smiling down at me. I must have been sleeping on his shoulder. “You okay?” he asks. I nod and the pounding courses around me. I grimace.
“Are you kidding? She’s not okay,” a voice says. It’s Rory, standing in front of us, arms crossed. His glasses are gone, making him look older. And, I’ll admit it, handsomer. “She’s a big girl. She can make a judgement of herself, I think,” Rick says suddenly appearing next to Rory.
My heart starts pound in my throat. No, this can’t be happening
up-willed, towering over, and never underneath. having the will to overcome, postured before the leap, and willing.
she stood quietly beneath the street lamp. it’s dark here, as the snow falls down around her. her hair lays coiled beneath a warm scarf she wrapped around herself – not even the knit can keep her warm – little puffs of hot air make the snowflakes in front of her face dance. who’s she waiting for? nobody’s coming for miles, and yet there she stands.
She was standing on the platform, watching the train go around the hill, out of sight. It had been seven years since she last saw him, and his sudden return was a surprise, but there was no place for him in her life now, too much had changed. The train was gone, and silence fell on the valley. Once again, she was alone.

Strong men, women, children. All ages, races, beliefs. They all are there, standing tall. They don’t take shit from anyone, anything. They are brave, fearless, always there.
