  2. Someone drank too much whiskey and tried to operate the forklift that had been abandoned outside the warehouse where business used to boom. The whole thing toppled and pinned the poor bastard to the ground, and he bled profusely from both his nose and mouth, and he wound up unresponsive by the time he was carted to the hospital. I was just starting as the intern of a surgeon when I saw his wife crying over his body, which had been connected to a spider web of plastic tubes.

  12. I was in the kitchen, my parents at work. I was suppose to go to school, but I slept in. As usual. I decided to grab my stuff. There was a book on the kitchen counter. I was curious, so I crept over there. I peered over to see the title. ‘Forklift.’ “What?” I said out loud. I grabbed the book and put it in my bag.

  13. He worked hard all day and the time spent in the back dock was never without some fun on the forklift. It was a moment in his heavy lifting, packing and busy day to drive that little machine.

  15. Tap-tap of impatience, slow crawl down,
How does it keep sinking and sinking without hitting the bottom?
    When does it stop?
It was all to put the rotting cardboard—more tape than box— on the top shelf of the warehouse, far above everyone’s head. Above mine.
From somewhere inside the box, part of me wonders what wonderful disaster awaits when it takes a tumble. The mechanical daily grind whirs, and sinks, and sinks, and never hits the floor, so in its grip I am locked, watching it mock me, with its broken lift button and unending downs. A wail from the top of the shelves. A shush, a shush, a silence. The lights go off, everyone has gone home. The neighbor’s lights and sounds cast shadows through the only window. I receive no bonuses, do not get paid, and am offered no aid. Straight to jail, do not pass GO.
    Nothing goes.
    It sinks.

  21. there was a man who took things too literally
a words figurative purpose he could not see
he looked perplexed at a set of utensils he received as a gift
until he ran off to another room and came back with a forklift
he stared at his spoons to the point of stoicism
eagerly awaiting them to spout a spoonerism
which is too bad because he took to heart that he was a shining wit
and let’s not even talk about what happens when he babysits

  24. My brother bought me an alarm clock for Christmas. It had all the bells and whistles like the time and date which was designed to keep me from waking up on Saturdays and thinking it was a work day. What I wouldn’t know is that the alarm sounded just like a forklift backing up, with that loud beeping noise. So the first time I used it that sound came on and not only woke me up…but I rolled out of bed and onto the floor thinking I was going to be run over by a forklift. LOL

  25. Heavy lifting, that’s what I think. I feel for those mechanical instruments, like whatever picks up the whole garbage bin for a row of apartments and poises it over the maw of the truck and then lets loose. Perhaps it’s a forklift. Don’t overload those poor forklifts is what I say.
I guess I identify with them. I’m overloaded. With worries, with fears, with hatred for what’s happening in Washington, with dirt and viruses and toxins in the air, with Kim Jong Un or Il pointing a nuclear missile exactly where I live and the state of Hawaii taking action by printing up pamphlets about how to protect yourself in an emergency situation. All of it: garbage. So what’s new with you?

  26. Forklift.

  27. He thought that he’d had it under control. He’d spent years learning how to work the heavy machinery. There was no reason that anything should have gone wrong, but it had.

One wrong move was all it took for the forklift to drop the cargo. One wrong move was all it took for the heavy, metal box to go crashing down. One wrong move was all it took for him to accidentally crush his best friend’s legs and paralyze him for the rest of his life.

  28. A child played with his friends, while their parents continued working in the construction site. He decided to hide in the forklift, as he saw the key’s dangling, he decided to turn the way his dad did. Well now he’s the only kid left.

  29. The forklift jutted forward as the man shifted the levers. He’d never driven on of these things in his life, but he was determined to figure it out if it mean getting out of the warehouse. The engine made a whirring sound as he shifted it again and the wheels spun. Well, at least he’d gotten the moving forward part down.

Everybody putting their weight on me.

Some days I like to be a forklift.
Feel like I’m someone people need.

Some days I hate being a forklift.
So, yeah. You can just leave.

  33. The arc of her insatiable hunger draws your neck towards her maw; its gravity is several orders of magnitude. And the damp heat that radiates is enough to drench a rainforest. It would take an atomic forklift to pry this beast off our plane of existence and back into the empty nothingness that she knows. Yet she’s not going anywhere and so you feel the force of her hunger coursing through you. It’s a low pass grumble that rattles your bones, tickles through your stomach, and races up your spine. A telegraph to your mind: don’t set her off, don’t set her off, don’t set her off. It’s hard to stay the course when she’s salivating above you. Yet you’ve never felt more alive.

  34. She watched the pallet get lifted into the truck and then turned to watch the hive of activity in the warehouse. Somewhere in there was the man who had the answers to what happened. She edged through the open garage door and wandered around the perimeter. If they noticed her, they didn’t make it obvious.
