  1. The bonfire cast eerie shadows along the angles of her face. He watched her silently, not sure what to expect to come out of her mouth next.

  2. Round and round and round you spin. Weaving in and out of swirling circles comprised of people, Fae, and other things you’ve only dreamed about; never dared hope existed. Vaguely you remember there is life outside what dances in the ring of the bonfire, but the memories are just as murky, just as faded, as the darkness beyond.

Laugh and twirl, laugh and twirl; this is your existence now.

And if you sometimes catch flashes of hunger behind bright eyes, or feel the tingling of exhaustion working its way up your limbs, or notice the way your breath catches and heaves, unable to keep up; you push those dark thoughts aside, because it is time to dance.

Still, you can’t help but wonder if they’ll ever find your body.

  3. We strike; flames connect and burst in zaps that leave both ends scarred. Where can I light these matches? Is that even a question? I can almost inhale the fumes from a hundred paces away.

  4. Smoldering, his flesh sizzled in a grotesque, wretching manner. The humour in which the civilians engaged in was that of madness. Regardless of prior morale foundations, their humanity fell away to the very consumption of humanity; cannibalism. How could one perpetuate sanity in a place so far from rational warmth? All that came was the fevered sweat of animosity.

  6. If you really think about it, bonfires represent our lives. Full of excitement, fire, and warmth. But it will eventually die out. Like us. Which is a horrible thought but that’s only when you look at it that way. You have to see the brightness in life, not the death and end because then you won’t really be living

I love to gaze into the flames, and roast marshmallows, and hear the little ones giggling with a secret, that is buring in their hearts and ears like the fire. I am in love with the flames.

  9. The bonfire was big enough to be the beach’s main light source. It was a torch, crackling with each aluminum can and bottle thrown against the splintered wood. I opened up another flask of whiskey and passed it around. The booze tasted hotter than the flames felt on my face. It was like I was setting my tongue alight.

“After this, what do we do next?” one member of the group asked.

  10. I was planning to meet my friends at the beach for a end of school bonfire. I was really excited and knew just what I wanted to wear and everything. Then all heck broke loose. I fell in a bottomless pit on the way there.

We shared our stories around it each night, gave each other dares but this was the last night. We wouldn’t see each other in a while again after this. It was our final night around the bonfire.

  13. Sea salt licked up the wooden planks. Brian grinned at her friend, uncertainly.
“Sure these aren’t pieces of a long-forgotten pirate ship blown on shore we’re burning?” she jokes, in an attempt to lighten the mood. Morgan rolls his eyes.
“Of course not. Everyone knows Rhode Island wasn’t exactly Pirate Central.” He pauses. “Maybe bootleggers,” he adds, as an afterthought, “but definitely not pirates. I don’t think we’re going to get lynched for burning some driftwood.”
