“Swing!” She shouted, and all the dancers in the room shook off the bonds of elegance they had been wearing. Shivering into new motion, they twirled and jived, smiles sinking from formal poise to real coy grins, like a violin discovering it’s really a fiddle.

The tide washed up to the sand, just flirting with the shells at the very edge, floating them up and dragging them down just a little ways before setting them down and rushing back out to the great wide ocean.

Carnival eyes shone in the nighttime gloom, seeing sights and glories just past the smoke of the midnight bars and sleazy strip dives. Girls! Girls! Girls! called the signs, but they saw something else. Skeletons roaming the streets for the dream, always the dream.

Just concealed under the edge of the river’s bank was a small glitter, the tiniest gleam. Underneath, if you swam, you came up in the Kingrat’s den, and it was the mightiest I have ever seen. Many a muskrat have perished, trying to gain entrance to such a palace.

He received the call around 4:30 that morning. Russian missiles had been launched and were heading in the direction of the u.s. embacy. He had to hurry. The president ran from the oval office, towards the jet waiting around the corner of the exit. He knew the world needed him now. And he needed the world.

It was so profound, the way he touched the inside of my leg and traced my thigh. I sighed and looked up at him. I didn’t want this. I stood up. He watched me dress and leave, and after that night, I never saw him again, not that I needed to. He was an angel, and I knew I’d always remember exactly what he looked like

The world was so dull to us then. We were nothing but statues in this god-forsaken world, and God as our witness, we would run from it.. and he knew us for us. And we assumed he respected us. But those were only assumptions, for we knew his love was blind. And the world was exuberant only then.

He looked out the window, musing about all the things he had lost. Life had gone by quicker, and slower, than he expected. He took a final breath as the windows shattered. Ten thousand gallons of pressurized seawater slammed into the bridge control room.

I hate the band at our school. They play well, but they really take away from the track and cross country programs… I feel like band at NB is like a cult. haha. Band geek cult. But they play nicely, never the less…

I think of loud noses and sounds. Of cops pulling you over and how people behind you sound when they yell in your ear. I think of how horrible it is to be that way and how much attention they need but most of all I dont really think about it to tell the truth. I dont know what to say about a megaphone besides the fact that there really is nothing to say.

A budding light stems from a planted seed. Roots stretch for miles, never overturned. Love is relevant to his growth and everything is peaceful. Love stems from our hearts.

I wish I could be more honest. I wish we weren’t all little vaults of secrets. But every secret now and then doesn’t hurt anyone.

More, harder. He was always pushing more, and he hated it, and he hated the ache that settled in his body each night as he tried to sleep. But he still pushed, because to disappoint himself would be worse. He had to train. If he ever stopped, he felt he would die.

She rushed to the control station, the lights flashing and alarms wailing.
“Commander, we’ve detected a threat with the three radius warning zone,” she cried.
She looked out the window. “Oh, god,” she whispered.

The woman peered out from under her cloak, hiding her painted face from the downpour. “You’ll see it at midnight, underneath St.Andrew’s chapel,” she whispered to the gentleman, before tossing a bundled package out into the rain. The horses of her black carriage whinnied as they were whipped to quickly get away; left behind in the mud, the man picked up the package. He had gotten the instrument he came for.

The fences of the little maritime town had been painted in pastel, but the paint was peeling in long flakes off of the weather beaten wood. Just past them, the salty water lapped at the feet of the town, kissing it. The air was chill, as it always was.

It was the first thing, he ever loved, after Geri and the sunlight and the taste of hot sizzling chicken taken when the street vendors weren’t paying attention. It had been a scrounging day, and he had found several elastic bands and some good tin cans in the landfill – that was when he saw the shiny corner sticking up, and went to investigate. Since it had half an antenna, the songs were fuzzy, but that was how he always heard music. Distant, through the walls of other people’s houses.

The voices buzzed through the radio – ” This is CJCY-95, bringing you the hottest tunes in the – what the hell? Oh my god – oh my god – she has fangs – she want to – she -“

The montage of images flitted across the screen; now rabbits mating, now elephants being dissected; now the birthing dance of the lark. And in the dark projection room, she leaned in close; he took off her glasses, and they watched.

“You shaved your sideburns,” you say, staring. This used to be your boyfriend. Standing here, in front of you, this used to be your boyfriend. You had your whole plan worked out, with your new boyfriend picking you up in the convertible, showing off, making jealous. But now that you’re here you don’t know what to do. You didn’t expect him to be wearing lipstick, high heels.

He dropped the pretzel on the gritty wet pavement. “What is going on?” He cried.

I’m tempted to lean in and kiss him, but I don’t. No matter that his forehead is tanned, sweaty, his eyes burning black and his shirt stuck to him in a way that shows his body carved of wood. I can’t do that anymore. He nods goodbye and keeps running. I will have to start walking my dog every morning.

The dinosaur of a computer hummed away behind them, sending rolls of e-mails to the printer one by one. They kissed in it’s green glow, their bodies entwined, warmth and touch all new to them, all observed only by the grey plastic behind them.

The air whipped around the blades of the helicopter, but the sound was lost in the tumultous raucous of the storm. They would have to turn back, they couldn’t see anything in the torrential downpour, and it was dangerous flying. Suddenly, one of the men stood up. “There!” He exclaimed. In the ten foot waves, they saw it: a small, fluorescent orange speck.

He ran for the door, but his sprained ankle floored him before he got there, sending him sprawling onto the gory concrete floor. She stepped over him lightly, walked to the door, and slid the deadbolt in place, before turning back to where he lay shaking. “Now let’s try that again,” she said coyly, picking up her sheath of knives and pursing her little pink lips.
