I used to worship him. He was as sacred to me as the saints are to Catholics, a hallowed object made to be revered and adored. I still wonder sometimes what changed.

Just a tiny piece of him was all I wanted. A sliver of his attention, to know that I truly did matter.

Black and pink, my favourite colours. I remember feeling sad when they deflated, the transience of happiness.

I stare at it day after day. He didn’t have many talents, but he was a genius behind the camera. The cityscape captured through his lens and magnified to take up the space of an entire wall. I wish I could tear it down.

He always made fun of my sandals, the flat kind with leather cords that wrapped around my ankles and calves. No one would have ever thought…

His lips were like sandpaper, cracked like the earth in the midst of a drought. It hurt when he brushed them against my own, a punishment.

They say there’s nothing like it- a woman scorned. He certainly had no idea.

Mint chocolate chip, dripping down the golden sugary squares of a waffle cone. He knew I always preferred dessert to just plain food as a main entrée.

The sound of my name on his lips, spoken only in the dark secret places between us, was silenced forever that day. I wish I could hear it just one more time.

‘This is my favourite part of you,’ he whispered in the shade of our tree by the lake, his tone a lazy drawl. ‘Long, graceful… Your neck reminds me of a swan…’

It was a little bit irritating, the way he pretended not to know I existed. But the fact that he was just pretending made it easier to bear.

The sun was blinding. Even behind heart-shaped lenses, it burned my irises, scalded my brain. I’ll never forget that day last summer.

My desk is from IKEA. It has a clear surface, adorned with the word “love” in various languages and typefaces. The last time you could actually see any of these, however, was three summers ago, before I got into university and it became the home of endless books and papers.

a lantern lights the night sky like my love for you, you will never dim like the lightbulb in my room.
I hope you glow forever in my life.
Please let me be your wife.

The dark pathway was lite by one, single lantern. The light stretched over the gravel exposing the mysteries in front of me. Sadly those mysteries were gone, expired, solved.

walls form the boundaries of our life. they divide buildings–homes, schools–into compartments. they separate us from others. But they also give us a place to display things we love–pictures, decorations, clocks. they provide us an opportunity to play with color and design. without walls we’d have one huge open space.

She sighed as she saw the oil start dripping from her car. On the middle of the highway, this certainly wasn’t her day. A trucker pulled to a stop behind her car, and a old man climbed out of his cab. “Need some help, lil lady?”
“No, no, I’m fine. I’ll have triple A on the phone in a few.” She forced a smile, a frowned once she realized her phone had no bars. “Uh… wait…can I get a ride?”

Looking at him, she felt like thorns were pricking into every inch of her being. He looked so happy; so nonchalant. As if this whole time, they never experienced any sort of love. That this was all just a game he played; oh how he did play her well. A tear slipped down her cheek. It tickled, soothing any pain in its path.

She heaved a sigh as she tried to push the rest of the trunk into her car. Sweat was gathering on her brow, and she silently scolded herself for choosing to move on one of the hottest days on record. She glanced behind her shoulder and saw him watching her. He had a big cool glass of lemonade in his hand, and small chiding smirk growing on his face. “Need some help?”

They say that there’s always going to be a glimmer of hope. But I never see it. I feel lost; like I’m in the middle of some crazy maze, and every single time I reach out to touch the walls, I’ll get shocked back. I’m in a hole. I’m stuck. I’m crying and I want to get out. He’s the only one there for me anymore, and he’s leaving me someday. I know it. I can’t find that glimmer of hope. Whoever said that to me – I hope you die.

“Ughhhh, my legs feel like a cactus,” Ana whined to her sister, who, in return, rolled her eyes.
“I don’t see the point in you shaving your legs tonight; it’s a first date,” the sister teased back coyly. “Unless you’re planning on a little more than a movie?”
Ana sniveled her nose up, “It may be in the cards. Safe than sorry, right?”
