she tried to get back into alignment
the oil needed to be changed
the antifreeze was leaking
but in her heart she knew
that she would never quite be the same
the wheels would always be at an angle
because the love she felt
was never a trifle
nor a game
but she had been called
the player who had been played
and she was like an old car
left to flounder on the roadside
until the final white plumes of smoke
devoured her engine
and left her walking in the snow
which is probably what she should have been doing
all along

The sage was sweet
and filled the room with smoke
She held her arms above her head
and sang an ancient tune
The words were useless
but the melody
Touched her heart
and made her swoon where she stood
She never looked down
and she never looked back
and she bacame
the some she never understood
she became the beauty
in the moon

I wrote you letters
Reams of paper
Falling to the floor
I tried to say
What needed to be said
It didn’t matter
You never read them
When I tried to talk to you
You nodded
Then ignored each word
Walked over it
Like you did each boundry
I tried to put in place
Until my only choice
Was to leave
You even tried to ignore that
Telling me
You didn’t want
To let me go
But this is one choice
You don’t get to ignore

So much of her life was in storage
The unit filled to the brim
While she lived in one tiny room

She wondered at the symbolism of that
At the idea that so much of her life
Was buried and waiting to emerge
But put away for future use

And what would it look like
If she pulled it all out
Let go of what she no longer needed
And made a life with what was left

She was mute for so long
Holding her tongue
To protect others
To protect herself
But she found the silence
Suffocated her
Stole her very self
And buried her
Under a wall of regret
And she vowed
To never bite her tongue
To never swallow her words
To never lose herself

She held the question in her hand
A kiss or a pill
Either one to ease the ache
To stop the thumping
In her brain
And she opened her hand
Letting the pills fall
Into the toilet
And kissed the inside
Of her palm instead

She had forgotten that she had options
More choices before her than she dreamed
And she kept looking at one or two
That were really no longer in her reach
You can’t look back to look forward
In fact, you just have to close your eyes
And leap, take chances you never thought
You would take
Go places you’ve never been
Open your wings to the wind
And fly in the opposite direction
You usually go

She carried a clipboard with her
Everywhere she went
Writing down notes
Joting down lines
Making up stories as she went
She noticed the details
Of every curtain, door, window
She could list off every dress
She had ever worn
And tell you what shoes she wore
Each time
But she could not tell you
What was inside her heart
Or how she would be able
To start again

I would pour my heart out to you tonight
But the lines are busy and the hour is late
There is no time in this spinning maze
No time to return, that is
Life is a dizzy spiral that goes round
But never stays in the same place
And we have lost touch with the space
Around us, with the heat in our own fingertips
I wanted to whisper to the wounds of the heart
To shake it all into nothingness
Then make it whole again
I wanted to erase the pain of yesterday
And replace it with bliss
But this is not the way things work
This is not the way I planned
And I am standing here with an empty hand
And an open heart, and the need to start
All over again

I open my veins to tell you what time it is
I drink the rain that falls from my eyes
This is one of those nights better spent in isolation
As the veil is thin and the night is open
I dread the opening of my eyes
The darkness of night
The hold you still have over my heart
The beginning
The ending
The unnecessary spinning we do
In, then out
Round and round
Each goodbye is another hello
Each good morning is also good night
And I hold tight to the razor in my hand
Take a stand and leap into the abyss below

She searched the globe
For answers
Over the mountain
Down the canyon
Deep in the ocean
Up into the clouds
And it was only
When she stopped looking
When she stopping running
That she realized
She was the prize
She had been seeking
All along

She held the keys in her hand
And debated
Which door to open
Which door to leaved closed
She decided to open them all
Flung them open
And let the memories
Wash over her
She left each door open
Like the Titanic
And hoped not to drown

The ship was sinking
The world was spinning
And she was holding onto the railing
As if that would save her
She didn’t realize
That she could jump
She didn’t realize
That she could fly
It was only at the last moment
When the water came to claim her
That she opened her wings
And lifted herself
Away from the disaster
She had unwittingly created
Away from the ship
That had been the whole
Of her existence
And in that moment of flight
She understood
That she had been living a lie
That she had been living
Someone else’s life
And that the only thing she needed
Was the wind at her back
And her own breath
In her chest

She felt the loss deeply
Felt it like a cut into her thigh
Like blood running down her leg
Into the toe of her pointed black pump
She wanted to return to a time of purity
A time when blood meant birth
Instead of death
When she did not realize
That beginnings meant endings
And when the world wasn’t quite
So dark in the morning
Or lonely at night
