butterfly

Oh topple this divisive wall that would keep me away from the truth. Let me glimpse what is within. Let me see if all that I hoped for is hidden behind.

orbit

Its interesting that when we’re younger, we’re taught all of these scientific concepts, the sun orbits the moon etc. but as we get older all of those are replaced with newer and more accurate concepts and we’re constantly readjusting our schema, our view of the world, to fit in all this new information. Why can’t we ever just be told the truth from the start?

hinge

She felt another powerful pull of influence wash over her and with one last quick glance, she mouthed “Do it,” to Eric. Her entire livelihood hinged on this man and his ability to save her. She turned back and stepped to Rolf’s outstreched arms. He shot Eric a wolfish grin and hoisted her over his shoulder. They took off, flying through the air as conciousness left her.

“I just don’t get why you like that story so much.” “Well, what’s not to like?” I asked. “There’s true love, miracles, death, despair, redemption, action…” I shrugged. It’s got a little bit of everything. Mike scoffed. “It’s a glorified romantic comedy.” “What?! You’re crazy. Have you even read the part when Westley fences Inigo. It’s killer and hardly romantic.”

bellow

“Come on!” Avi screamed. She couldn’t move. Her feet were rooted in place as she felt her master’s powerful sway overtake her. Avi grabbed her shoulders and shook her hard. “Let’s go, Lucy! We have to leave!” The thick fog cleared from her head as he drug her along behind him. As they raced into the long hall she heard the master bellow with rage.

accordion

She gazed in wonder at the world around her. From the ancient, cobble-lined streets to the tiny shops filled with exotic treasures, she couldn’t believe she was finally here. Where to go first? The scent of a hundred flowers whafted through the air to a melodious tune played by the man with a giant accordion. This was the place to be.

bench

I was sitting on a park bench one day. I drifted away. I was imagining all of the endless locations where this bench could possibly be located. Suddenly, I was sitting on this same bench in Rome,Italy. I sat there, people watching and enjoying sounds. I closed my eyes and took in the scents in the air. I opened them and I was on Venice beach. Still sitting upon my bench. It was magical. I heard someone call my name. I looked to the left to see who might know me on Venice beach, and I was suddenly in Nice, France. Sitting upon my bench outside of a popular restaurant, a delicious cup of Joe in my hand.

crisp

A crisp breeze blew through them as they stood there, hand in hand. He gazed at her, this beautiful and mysterious creature. As the wind swirled through her hair he smelled the sweet and subtle scent of her shampoo. Strawberries. How did I manage to capture the affections of such a girl? This is a dream. It has to be because she’s far too perfect to be real.

conceal

They sat there in the parked car, an uncomfortable silence between them. She cleared her throat. “So, umm… great movie, huh?” He turned to face her and smiled. “Yeah, it was.” Another empty silence crept upon them.

Her emotions were running wild and confusion was blinding. It took every ounce of her composure and strength to conceal what she really felt about this man. It was too late for them now, though her heart fluttered at the very thought of his name.

sparkling

“I love you, Mandy, with all of my heart…” He gulped a deep breath, trying desperately to maintain his composure. “And I wish that things could be different.” He cupped her face in his hands as she stifled a sob. Her eyes were sparkling with unshed tears, waiting to overflow. He gently kissed her parted lips. “Now, I really must go.” The loud, obtrusive whistle of the train startled them both.

bland

Katerina slammed her fist down on the table in frustration. The dog jumped and gave her a patronizing stare. She chuckled. “Sorry Bucco.” The dog cocked his head and whimpered. “I know, I know. But I just can’t help it. This story lacks flare, zest… I dunno. Something. It’s too bland.” Bucco dropped his head on to his paws and seemed to sigh. “If only I had your life, buddy, things would be so much easier.”

savage

I crawled frantically across the blood-streaked floor trying desperately to get away from my incapacitated captors. I heard one of them groan and turned my head just in time to see him start to roll over. I wildly tried to regain my footing but my legs were still weak from the savagery of brutal torture they had inflicted upon me.

apron

I will always think of my mother fondly; the way she would eagerly bustle around the kitchen preparing some sort of tasty treat for us kids. I remember the warmth radiating from the oven as delicious aromas of pies and quiches wafted through the room. I remember the dainty way she tied her apron around her plump frame, a picture perfect bow at the back of her rounded waist.

thorns

Today’s word is thorns. Thorns are most well-known for growing on roses. That always seems oddly poetic because roses are so beautiful and lovely in contrast to the ugly, sharp, hateful thorny-ness that grows on their stems.

trunk

“You have no idea where you’re going, do you?” She growled. “You’re lost. I don’t get why you just won’t ask for directions. Oh great. Now we’re going to be late!” I just looked at her and with venom in my voice spat out a tort reply. “We’re not lost so if you’ll please just shut up I can concentrate on where we’re going.” She just glared me in response.

We continued down the dark lane as a sudden thump resonated from the trunk. Then again and again. My wife looked even more pissed. “Now what the hell was that?!” Exhaserbated, I just rolled my eyes. There it was again.

desert

The landscape was barren, empty and dry. All he could see for miles was the firey sun illuminating mountainous dunes of desolate sand. The blistering heat assaulted him from every angle as he shielded his eyes from the sun’s intense glare. Patton was all alone in this vast desert with no map, water, food or shelter and his prospects were not looking good.

dessert

I looked at the heavenly spread that adorned the long, oak table. There was every dessert imaginable — cakes, pies, tartlettes, cookies, brownies, cupcakes, ice cream, candy galore — all as far as the eye could see. My mouth watered at the prospect of attacking these edible delights with a fervor I had never before known.

carved

She struggled against the leather straps, tears streaming down her face. The killer slowly approached, the glint of a blade gleamed in the shadows. The girl screamed again for help but no one could hear her plea. She was doomed. The masked figure bent down and caressed her throat gently with the knife as she sobbed.

“Ppplease,” she whispered. “You don’t have to do this. I won’t say a word to anyone, I swear!”

The man ignored her and continued to drag the blade down her body until suddenly, he carved a chunk of flesh out of her arm. Her anguished wails rocked the lone cabin.

hurry

“Come on!” I cried. He stared at me, exhasperated. “Why are you always in such a hurry?” I shot him an angry glare. “We’re going to miss out on all the good seats if you don’t get your ass in gear, Gary!” With a heavy sigh, he pulled on his boots and schleped out the door. I wondered exactly why he had to be so difficult.

flood

There I quietly stood, unbeknownst to her that I was even there. The shadows gave me the perfect opportunity to take it all in from afar. I saw her lips quiver and her puffy red-rimmed eyes blink back more salty tears. I always knew I’d cause someone a flood of grief, I just never expected that it would be her and I was sincerely sorry for that.

dusk

It was nearing dusk as she sat atop the edge of the jagged ravine. Javier walked up and placed his hands gently on her shoulders. She sucked in a deep breath. “Do you really think it’s over?” He knelt down beside her. “Cariña, I promise you, you’re safe now.” She looked into his dark brown eyes and she knew he was telling her the truth.

scar

She fled down the dingy hallway as the hulking man raced after her. “Help me!” she screamed. “Somebody! Please!” Their footsteps echoed down the corridor. She turned and to her horror she saw him about to overtake her. Her eyes widened. That face. She would never forget that scarred face and those dark, empty eyes. With one last burst of energy she threw herself around the corner as he lunged for her.

sleeve

The tears were streaming down her face as she looked at him, betrayal evident in her eyes. He looked away as he said, “I’m sorry, Veronica. I’m so sorry. I never meant to hurt you.” She cried even harder now, wiping her nose on her sleeve. “But why, Tom? Why did you do it?” He turned his back to her. He couldn’t let her see his tears as he answered “Because I had no other choice.”

temple

“Are you kidding me?” I asked, incredulous. “You can’t be serious.” A moment of silence passed as Jeff just looked at me, mouth in a tight line. “You’re joking right?” I asked. “Please tell me you’re joking.” “Uh, no Nadina. I’m not joking.” I just stared in disbelief. After a moment of silence, I gave a snort and replied, “There is absolutely no way that Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is better than The Temple of Doom. You’re crazy! Utterly insane.”

princess

I sauntered in to the massive library and perused the tall shelves of literary wonders. I have never seen so many books before and the sight made my mouth water. There was a mountain of knowledge contained within these walls and I was keen to devour it all. I stopped short and gasped at the sight of a small, tattered novel with gold binding. This book wasn’t just any book, it was one of a kind and it was my favourite. My brain was suddenly flooded with images of the beautiful princess and the swashbuckling pirate. How I loved this tale of endless and undying love.

gown

I looked down at the gossamir and crinoline, gently touching the silky folds of the shimmering skirt. This was the most beautiful gown I’d ever seen, but I had to wonder who it came from. I had never seen anything like it before; it was foreign to me, just like the place I was about to enter. I bowed my head, took a deep breath and gently pushed open the heavy oak door. My time had come.

sneaky

It was dark. He slowly crept up behind the unsuspecting man. The floorboard creaked ominously. Only a few more steps to go…

“Bah!” yelled the little boy.

The man screamed and clutched a hand to his chest as the boy tumbled over in laughter. Slowly the father regained his composure and started to chuckle.

“You,” he said to his son, gently wagging a finger his way, “you are very, very sneaky, my boy.”

slouch

I entered the room. “Stop slouching, young lady!” yelled my grandmer. Stupid, old, ancient bag. I straightened my posture as she =about the room. I huffed and thought about how much I hate it here. She’ll never understand me. If only my parents were still alive, things just might be different.

anywhere

“Let’s run away together.” I said.
“And where will we go?”
“Anywhere.”

Jake looked at me skeptically.

“Let’s just get as far away from here as we can.” I pleaded with him. “No one will have to know.”
