pills

She lines them up in front of her plate before she does anything else, on a morning. It isn’t the first ritual: that’s the brushing of her teeth, the brushing of her hair, the sit-ups, dressing. But the pills come before anything else, the real business of life. Her mother comes in with the toast just as she’s finishing — her hair tousled, eyes sleepy: nothing like her.

She takes the pills one at a time, carefully. She picks up a pill, places it on her tongue, picks up the glass, takes a sip of water, puts the glass down and begins again. Eight pills, each morning. Four, around lunch. And then another eight at dinner.

She eats the toast, next, without any real appetite, but because she has to.

“Are you ready?” her mother asks, when she’s done. She’s already picked up her bag by that time, already heading for the door. “Don’t forget your pills!”

As if she would.

hooked

I was hooked on it. I couldn’t let go. It shaped me, it made me. It was what I was. I couldn’t see past the barrier it put in front of me. I couldn’t see any other way. “You have to let go,” they would tell me. But I would never listen.
How could I listen? I was nothing without it. I was nothing without being hooked on this, being obsessed with it. I wanted it. I needed it. It was me.

pour

The room was filled with a pleasant aroma. I poured the coffee from the pot into my mug, enjoying the sound it made as it splashed against the glass sides. The smell drifted towards me, the steam moistening my skin. The kitchen was quiet–empty except for me. It was morning. The coffee was fresh and I was ready. It was a new day.

trot

I was trotting down the lane when I noticed that there was something in the woods. Getting closer to the noise, I could hear that it was a small animal. Curiously, I got even closer and closer and closer until I was on top of the noise. Then I heard a loud screaming noise and realized that I was stepping on its tail. So I reached down and grabbed a mouse and pulled it up to my face where it looked into my eyes and bit me on the nose.

I trotted through the dark and dense forest, calling out to my little brother. I cried as I ran, the tears dripping onto the ground. I was afraid that if I stopped chasing, he would be gone forever.

chase

I ran down the street, chased by an unknown thing. It was fast, and breathingly heavily. But even worse, the thing was catching up to me by the second. Horrifying. I ran down a little farther, until he finally caught my shirt collar and pulled me down.

apron

The waitress was standing at the counter, a white apron around her waist.
” Hurry up with that burger!” I yelled. My stomach was growling, I was starving.
She looked up at me and a glared.
” It’ll be right out,” she answered with hast.

The lake sat peacefully in the valley beneath the mountain. The sun shone down on the waters while the birds flew up above.

roll

It rolled down to the floor. Broken and shiny. A bottle. An abandoned brown bottle. He looked up. He swore he’d saw the doornob turn.

Rolling for me, has to do with rollerskating, which was my favorite hobby as a child. I listened to The Bodyguard Soundtrack while skating in my twirly skirt.

Rock and roll was one of the most popular music genres in the 50s. It was first introduced during that era and teenagers everywhere quickly caught on to the fad.

runaway

And you learn
The awful truth,
So you hide,
you runaway,
but you’ll come back.
You always do.
It’s a habit,
you can’t help it.
You just do.

runway

The pain has a touch down
when the plane touches the ground.
Everything will come piling out
with the passengers
and the luggage.
The tears,
They only fall down,
because all that love you had,
is now reaching the runway.

We hold hands,
make our own way.
We smile,
It burns deep.
We love,
like they taught us to.
We think,
we know better.

arrow

There was an arrow that stuck to the ground like a cold frost on a winter’s day. It was buried so deep that even the strongest man in the world couldn’t pull it from the ground. But that’s to be expected when it was fired by Robin Hood. I guess there really isn’t any chivalry left in the world.

intuition

Thinking of the first thing to mind, Clairise went with her intuition and began digging holes around the stumps in the yard. She knew that her father had buried the item along a few tree seeds in their garden years ago. Hoping that the important stump she needed had not been removed from its earthen tomb she went on with her search.

crane

I looked up. A crane flew past. It was big. The beak filled with water.
Looking back down, my little sister was playing in the white sand covering the beach. She was making a sand castle, every piece and tower as elaborate as herself.

keys

i frequently lose my keys. it’s ridiculous. i can have everything else set and ready to go, travel mug in hand, and i will not have my keys. my boyfriend will say, “oh nikki, why can’t you just keep them in the same place always?” oh no, no i cannot. that would make too much sense.
my mom gave me a key ring since my frequent shopper key ring cards would always slide off. that doesn’t make me lose them less though.

thumbtack

Thumbtack
Pointy and sharp
Sticking to the board
Holding that paper up
The paper I would rather not see
Scared to find my name
With the grade next to it
I didn’t do so well on it
I finally look to find
An A+ next to my name
