You are safe, you are safe, you are safe.
Never mind the downpour out the window, the smell of dead skunk, the tired officers congregating at the Starbucks waiting for the mellow crimes. The beating heart of a book is waiting for you. Dive in.

Five drinks down and I’m a little buzzed by now, buzzed enough to make eye contact, so I do. And I swear I’ve never seen a brighter brown. Another two and maybe I can move my mouth a little in front of her. I swear I’m a little hopeless at this.

It’s a little impossible. It’s a little impossible to take someone like you and not reduce you to ashes. Your hands are on fire; your eyes are too bright. I can’t picture you in my mind without turning you into an object. But you make a beautiful, beautiful thing.

I wanted only a home, to be warmly received, a dark red housemat, a collared dog with a wagging tail, the sight of stairs in front of the doorway, the smell of kitchen spices. But his arms were good enough.

It’s a little bit too freaky at this time of day to be paying attention, serious attention, to any thoughts that pop up in your mind.
So go to sleep now. And when you wake up, horrified, convince yourself that it was all only a dream, a dream; only a dream that belonged to yesterday.

Here was nothing to it, only a sculpture set to fall apart in the heart of a hellstorm of leaves. Only one person I know would’ve done this, melted an idol of ice to surprise our jungle-bound selves. I miss her.

We belong to ourselves, to each other, to the sky, to our bodies, to our buildings, to our words, until death returns to claim us.

The walls are still there. The sky is falling. Brick red never looked so dangerous. We were bound to this place and it’s binding us. We were sound in our worries. Fear’s finding us.

I still have his headphones, and I have no idea what to do with them. I tried putting them on the other day. You can’t judge someone without listening to them for a while in their headphones.

So I tried. But I could only hear silence in them, or I couldn’t hear at all.

The soft aroma of the white house she remembered so well; the sunlight dancing off the walls; the rugs laid in perfect rest. Streaming across, the wind would make the curtains in the kitchen shake their sweet transparent heads. And on the counter, an empty bowl of cherry pits.

On the tip of the tongue on the top of the ladder at the edge of the room on the third floor of your soul, stop and stare. Admire the framework in the architecture of something hidden, something you’ve stowed away years upon years ago. Then move on: Exhibit G.

The bells of the cathedral ring every Sunday morning, every noon on every beautiful cloudless Godless Sunday morning, reminding me always of the wrong thing. I think I’ll move when I get the chance.

All the things that hurt you will be as impermanent as the pain itself. I’m not telling you to let go. I’m just leading you somewhere where you’ll figure out what it means. Call it a quest, whatever. But trust me.

The sun beating down every inch of my body to my knuckles and up my neck and finally to my eyes I take away the caution to do anything but breathe and I sprawl myself, outwards, and pray. Like pulling staples off your fingers, it’s gotta hurt but you gotta.

The weeping snow fails to consider that under its feathers are piles, piles of old junk, junk beneath dirt and below everything else existent. If you’ve ever tried to burn it all, you’d know.

Close your eyes, once, then over and over again.
This, too, will pass, as they say. Are you surprised? It’s been on my mind for a while, this once and lovely moment. Bask in it forever. In knots like the ends of a balloon, our stomachs grind with nervousness. Our eyes glaze over. It’s time.

The smell of burnt polystyrene and a little bit of chaos: nothing to run away from. Sound everywhere. But stay. Jump over the walls, look, breathe.

How do we know? An elevator rises at a rate of too many miles an hour and a few stories up isn’t enough time to sing something real, or pinch yourself and everyone around you, or finish the last wave of tears you can keep to yourself. How do we function when it’s so hard to be alone when you’re trapped in public?

A half-crescent hanging among fireballs too far away to care. The trees stripping themselves as the weather grows colder, old initials carved into their trunks. And you, finding your way home before light.

Of dusk, I left a sadness etched behind for night to find again. The sun died in loving arms. I walked away with brisk.

Up in the attic, roaring like wind: he collapses a little until he thuds back upright, playfully. His sisters and brother join in and continue the stampede, the sounds of their playing like thunder on still terrain.

Like a blemish on the surface of a perfect object, he stood calmly in the middle of the room, blocking the doorway. We caught each other from across and I tried to whisper bloody murder with my eyes.

A little bird beckons for its mother to come. The mother tilts its head, as if to say, “What’s wrong?”, but she doesn’t need to. The answer is always the same.

Can you see the auroras soaring over the sky like daydreams caught in bliss? They are whispers caught in a cold fog breath and drowned in color. Such is this view.

She whispers beautiful like a cloud cries pretty. It’s worth more than platinum when she closes her eyes and smiles, her skin a heaven I have never known before.

The sand makes indents of its own, shifting itself into a patchwork sort of mystery even as its prints wash away. On the sunrise a lonely person smiles, noticing the brilliance of this tiny detail, and for this he deserves it.

Down, feathers. If the sky had been any more greyer the commotion would be barely visible. As it was, people were already rushing about it, to and fro, screaming things. Amid the carnage, even the vultures held back. And in the middle of it all laid an egg.

On the stable end was a pile of rocks. And then there were none.
Up on the platform on the giant weighing scale of life, someone is in delicate balance. They think they’ve got it all together. And then they slip and all and find that hell actually exists, and it exists on Earth.

I am caught with sweat and taken into a place of suffering. I am one with others in pain now. Feeling, if we wish we couldn’t. Maybe in some other reality we would reach out to each other, eschewing anywhere, and pity together.

Over the marble flooring laid an expanse of jewels. All around they seemed to glitter with maniacal surprise: evil objects which themselves seemed confused in their setting. I knew nothing either. I swear I didn’t.
