The shore reminds me of a beach. A shore is like the shallow part of the beach near the sand. But it can also mean other things.

The beverage was orange. It had a sparkle to it. It was unlike anything she had ever seen. The way the surface seemed to dance and ebb against the glass with no movement whatsoever. She walked across the clearing and reached for it. It was beautiful almost incandescent. She lifted it slowly to her lips and sipped the brew. Her mouth was enveloped in flavor. The drink swooshed atop her taste buds. She’d never felt so light as she lifted to the sky.

The roasted cinnamon nuts permeated the air. It was such a beautiful sunny day at the ballpark. The kids were laughing and running around behind the dugouts. Little Adeline was chasing the butterfly she had seen perched atop the fence. It’s little yellow wings helping her keep track of it as she followed it for a closer view. These are the days I am so glad to be a mother, to see the joy written across their faces. This is love.

The stars are glowing at night on the top of my head. The fireflies are buzzing around from tree to tree signalling others to join them in the fun by glowing their majestic yellow light.

She is twelve years old the time it first happens – the utensils begin to vibrate in their drawers, the floorboards slamming together, the pots and pans clanging. Their state is hardly known for earthquakes, and yet – well, and yet.

The cages were like the ribs around each and everyone of us. We sat there trapped, muscles moving in an entrapment of bones. We were the hearts, we were what kept them alive.

With a heavy heart, I plodded forward. “Me,” I whispered hoarsely. “I’ll do it.” A puff of air escaped from within the caverns of my chest with an ‘oomph’.

She looked everywhere for the compass, and ironically thought, she could need it to look for it.
“I need myself to look for it as well”, she said “but I can’t find me either.”

When I think of the word compass, I think of travelling. It brings back so many memories of my time on my gap year and travelling last summer but ultimately, it makes me think of freedom and being able to follow whatever direction your heart wants to.

I tried to back up some more, but my back hit the wall. I held my hands up and said in a shaking voice, “Please, I’m not who you think I am.”

“I don’t understand, it was here a minute ago.” I let the smile fall from my face as I turn back toward the screen, panic starting to set in as I search the files.

I kept looking over my shoulder, sure that someone would find me at any second. My mind was almost blank with terror. I watched the little bar at the bottom of the screen. 36%…37%.

My future is…loading, please wait. Next year, I will…loading, please wait. I can’t wait until I graduate, then I’ll…loading, please wait. Hopefully I figure this out soon.

Waiting, waiting, waiting. My leg jiggled up and down hurriedly. I kept glancing around, turning my head around.

We sat staring at each other. She wouldn’t meet my eyes, her gaze flicking around the room.

The water moved listlessly, the leaves floating on top of the stream moved in almost unnoticeable increments. The sun was mercilessly hot, and humidity sat thick in the air.

She jumped off the horse easily, hitting the ground with hardly a sound. I watched jealously before sliding off my own horse in an undignified manner, narrowly avoiding landing on the ground ass first.

I can’t get air into my lungs. Every time I suck in a choking, rattling breath I feel the air rushing down, but I can’t feel the rush of oxygen.

My eyes scanned the rows frantically. Where was it? I jumped when I heard a small noise from the next room. I had to find that book before anyone knew it was here.
