I learned the sign for below in ASL
you take one hand and move it around
underneath the other one
it’s the reverse for above
but I wondered, what if you only have one hand?
Can you use your feet?

He said that my bowling name
Should be sparkly bright as his suggestion
But his friend gave me BottleCap
Which is what I initially went with
It’s silly but it made me feel part of the
Crowd. Like sparkling braces had
Been taken off my teeth
And I could now smile proudly.

Rice pudding
Eggshell white walls

My mind goes blank when I see this word
Like the fruitless flavorless, odorless
Things this word can describe

This entry
Is somewhat
Utterly and grotesquely

He threw the blue orb
Sending it hurdling
Onto the brown bridge that
Would lead to the destruction of a red and white
It was a dance of will power
The savage wrath
Of Tango

she sat in a pool
filled to the brim with lillies
floating on the green and pinkish white
it was an atmosphere of hazy romantic
ness and if someone snapped a finger
the dream would shatter
like the face of a clock when the
hands no longer work
her face was solemn but
her ideas were bright

in my family
there are half a dozen “kids”
including my stepsiblings
I’m one of a biological set
of a 1/3 dozen
I don’t know what my parents were thinking
Like that
In this economy I’m surprised
At how people can have kids at all
Let alone have 20+

They dig like thumbtacks
Through my freshly washed socks
Prickle into my veins
Like tentacles of an evil unseen octopus
I seize up like I’m having a fit
They stick me with tubes in a hospital bed
They say every rose has its thorns
But I’m about to wilt

A shoelace protruded from the trunk
Of the old man’s beaten up Chevy
The police trailing him decided to call in back up
The old man was hard of hearing and light
sensitive so when the sirens blared
he had no idea what was going
When his car finally stopped
The police investigated the trunk
And found…

A year of hope for some
A glimmer that will soon be history
For the homeless near where I live
I helped make and serve dinner
And it was them that gave me a gift
And not the other way around
In this glimpse of life, I want to be more grateful

stone wall stretched across 2 shores
a hurdle you have to get over
cross that once you get to it they say
a part of a song
the london one fell down in the rhymes
of my childhood
where oh where does this word lead
and where does it stand over the waters
of this life?

The chimney in my bedroom
Carried up smoke from our woodstove
And for six years nobody believed
That this could be affecting my asthma

Also, on an unrelated note
How does one hang stockings by
a fireplace if they don’t have one

And if you have a fire outside
Is the forest a fire place too?
Or is it just that one brick encampment?

The water cascaded down the cobbled streets
Flooding their shoes and galloshes with
Cold water as the people tried to avoid
Slipping on salt covered ice patches
That came in time to trip them up
On their busiest last day of buying all
Too quick notice gifts
But the reflections in the puddles
Resounded that this was peace eternal

For some reason all I can think of is the time my sister and I
Were fighting and she
Threw a dictionary at me and it nearly broke my nose.
My then stepdad’s voice crashed like thunder as he pounded up
the stairs upon hearing her guilty cries and boomed, “What the hell is going on in here? You’re supposed to be ASLEEP!”

I have scars on my knuckles and knees
They’re white and thin and I
Don’t remember where I got all of them
I’ve never seen the marks of my family member
Who cut away at his life
Tried to bleed away the agony he felt
For so many years
My mind is hurt.

The view of the mountains
Lined up in four neat squares
Hung on the walls
Like climbers for their dear lives
When they realized
They’d had too big ambitions
Their views had been too grand
And now their stories were panoramas.

For the first time in years
My right hand has escaped the blemishing of
Eczema for about a month
My knuckles are usually cracked and dried
Swollen and perhaps bleeding
Like the rest of my body my hands have
Their moments of imperfection
But I can appreciate them.

My temple
My forehead
Etched in lines in portraits
Taken by strangers I will never meet
Shirley Temple what I drink with a straw
Poison of choice
I don’t drink alcohol
This is my temple speaking.

My stepsister’s screen name was intended to be
PolkadotPrincess but she forgot the extra S
So it became polkadot princes
Which sounds like a group of flamboyent men.
I don’t think she made that association
But I just think the idea is funny.

She looked like a beautiful sea goddess
My sister in law
Wearing a pale sequined gown the color of
Flower stems and sky.
Underneath the gown, deep within the caverns
And folds of her body, my nephew lay growing
Living underneath layers of love

The view from the top of the mountains
That I climb
Are ones of familiar places, but I’m seeing
Them from a different angle,
And they look like minute villages,
Thumbprints in the universe
I tower over my town like a giant.

Kipper has a knack
For sneaking butter and cupcakes
Cheese and wooden spoons off our
Coffee table when he comes to visit
This sheltie knows how to be sly
He slides his pink tongue around anything
Within a few inches distance
And brings it towards his gleaming chompers

Credit card
I do not have a single one of you
And I am unapologetic
Within a year I would be heavily immersed in debt
Your shiny grin would make
My weak and failed heart spin
Your platinum gold cover
Will always hover
Against the vault of my mind.

Today my stepfather and I cut boughs of red berries to make into a christmas centerpiece. The word brings me back to the days of Home Ec where we had to bring in a vase or a pumpkin or something to shadow over the measly french toast and corn syrup, microwave bacon and mix muffins we prepared as brunch for finals.

I read an article in cosmo about how marbles
Can make getting down and dirty
More intense
I’m really afraid to ask how
Our culture went from using these glass
Objects as toys to ones
Used as objects for…pleasing?
I played with marble works as a child
I traded them with my friends
I associate the word with cake
At least I did

Solitary confinement
Like a deck of cards
This hand of life you have been dealt
Hit the wall
No bright lights just cameras
No faces just trays shoved through the flap in the door
What did you do to deserve this
In the casino of life?

my heart is pounding underneath aching ribs
and bruising shoulder blades
I started eating meat again because I am anemic
I take the soul of an animal so that I can be strong
I thank the animals for giving me strength
I thank my heart for keeping me alive

In the beginning there was whipped cream
In the end there were crumbs on cracked plates
What started as a simple yearly ritual
Turned into a heavy cream battle
Vanilla flecks flying
We were supposed to say what we
Were grateful for
As we sat amongst the rubble of our
Favorite dessert

despite all the crazy stuff happening in my life these days, I have to think positively. I’ve got 0 positive blood, so maybe I should be like my blood and think about all the bright days to come. I just have to hold my head high, I must refuse to give up.

the fall is the worst time of year for me. It’s dated back since I was a little kid. There were good things too- the leaves changing, going back to school with a new L.L.Bean backpack, figuring out which costume to don for Halloween. But all that aside, autumn is just not a great season for me.
