Sighing. It’s kind of an indication that you’re exasperated, or disappointed, or just plain listless. Why do we do it? It’s just a loud exhale, why does it have such connotations? Or maybe it means even more – perhaps it has some sort of psychic root in our behaviour, something that’s instinctual as a method of conveying some manner of emotion such as annoyance or disbelief. I just know that I do it a lot at work.

It was early when he arose from his bed, determined that today he would finally put his plan into action. The sun had not yet risen and he creeped down the stairs in darkness.

She stared at the small vial of glimmering silver liquid, slowly pouring out onto the table in small blobs. She touched it with her pinky finger. She licked her finger.

I am distracted right now, she thought. Distracted from life by death. Distracted from reality by the memory of white roses and a small, too small urn being buried, one shovel full of dirt at a time.

The paperback was wrinkled from being dropped in the bathtub. It was old, it was yellowed. She loved it anyway. She liked to just run her finger down its creased spine.

The shower bubbled with hot water and blood streamed down her leg. Shaving was the worst part of her day. Wincing, she leaned against the shower wall and wiped the blood off. The water turned cold. Dammit!

the world has a nosebleed from too much white powder. all of the snow from the ice caps hasn’t melted, it’s been bundled into plastic baggies by the hands of the earth and straightened into lines in the flats of the universe and we’re going to sit on its skin and feel the wrinkles and cheekbones protrude.

gym class and i lose to you at tether ball
science and i drop the beaker of acid
math and i can’t add two and five
but one and one doesn’t seem to work either.
what is there to be graded
but the slope of the hill
that is life,
and is it up or down?
it depends on which direction we’re traveling.

Do you remember sitting inside planetariums filled with real stars you’d brought down from the night sky for me? It felt as thought earth and here were so far away, and yet, two in one, a point atop another point.

a laundry hamper and a pair of sheets and detergent and you are gone. the fluorescent lights are the soundtrack to my farewell, each skin cell woven into the cotton 300-counts being cleansed away with a couple of quarters. you’re not the cheap kid, though, and this can’t get any harder. but what about the fabric softener?…

dog sleeping on couch
cat on bed
fingers on keyboard
I’d be better off dead
call me silly
call my crazy
but when it comes to writing
don’t call me lazy

a dull thud on the membrane of my ribcage. peel back my lungs, you cried, and i did, we breathed the blind air gulping as fish out of water often do, in a simultaneous synchronized sweaty dance and my head on your chest was a drum.

He walked into my vision, and I gasped. My heartbeat thumped in my chest, pulse quickened and sweat broke out on my forehead. A smile crossed my lips. He was soft, fuzzy, tricolored, wriggly, squealy. He was my new dog, and I was already in love.

I could feel your heartbeat against my palm. A gentle lub dub, like the comforting hum of a window-perched A/C unit. You know that I cannot breathe for you but sometimes, I wish, I wish… my eyes blink to the beat of your pulse and in an instant, it’s over.

Nothing is sadder than a summer garden ruined by a gardener’s neglect. The weeds are thriving, and the flowers have bloomed faithfully, yet the gardener did not show the same loyalty by tending to the plants in return! Sadness. Sadness.

I have no idea how to install any kind of appliance, including a refrigerator or even something simple like hooking up a washing machine. It might be a girl thing, or it might be brain damage… Sigh. One thing’s for sure: I’d make a lousy maytag repairman.

a name for the one you love and try to find where he is. you have to create him yourself or he’ll never be. find yourself in the home of your choice; there’s no wrong answer.

To suspend belief and to think that all is possible. To dream and to know that what you do today matters. To love and hope that you’re love will never be suspended, unreturned
