He turned the steak over so the other side could cook.
“When’s it doing to be done, Daddy?”
He smiled down at his little daughter. “Soon, sweetheart. Very soon.”

She knew it was just wishful thinking. How could someone like him ever notice someone like her? Yet when she was alone, she couldn’t help daydreaming about the two of them walking on the beach at sunset, hand in hand.

He loved being outdoors. He loved to go hiking with his wife and daughter in the nearby mountains. It was so peaceful there, away from civilization.

The rock came at me so fast I almost didn’t dodge in time. I hit the ground and rolled over, covering my head. Another rock hit the ground next to me.

I hoped my instincts hadn’t misled me as I tiptoed through the dark corridor. He was here somewhere, I was sure of it.

I danced along the rooftops, sprinkling fairy dust everywhere. Nightmares turned to pleasant dreams, and those who’d been lying awake now slept soundly.

I shoved the disposable items in the fridge and slammed the door. Why did I have to do all the work?

Slow and steady. Don’t look down. That’s what they told me. I make my way to the end of the tightrope and heave a sigh of relief.

I stared at her for what felt like forever. All I could say was, “You’re gorgeous.”

I couldn’t sleep that night. I kept tossing and turning, thinking about what he’d said to me earlier that day. What had he meant? Was there another girl, or was something else going on?

The loss still pained him, even after all this time.
Every so often, he would reach for the place on his belt where his sword had once hung, only to find nothing.
It hadn’t just been a weapon. It was all he had left of his father.

The man crumbled the bread in his hands and threw the pieces one by one into the duck pond.
» Posted By Brooke On 02.15.2017 @ 8:49 am
He shook his head and moved the piece across the board. “Your move.”
A smile crossed his face as he waited for his opponent. They might be playing a game, but what he had in mind was very real.
For so long, he’d been a pawn. Now, he would be king.

Years had passed, and the opera house had fallen into disrepair. But the ghosts of dancers twirling onstage, musicians tuning up in the orchestra pit, and notes hanging in the air long after they’d been sung were still there, if you cared to look and listen for them.

I can’t figure how to beat this stupid game. I need guidance, but don’t know where to find it. I doesn’t matter, though, because in the end, it’s always a matter of crossing your fingers and hoping for the best.

He’d been well educated in the ways of the outside. No matter where he went, he always stood apart.

He drew the dagger and carefully cleaned it, polishing it until it shone. He wanted to look his best for the big occasion, right down to his weapon.
He’d been waiting so long, Now, at last, he would have his revenge.

“You’ve done so much for me. How can I ever repay you?”
I smiled at her. “Just be yourself.”
She threw her arms around me and hugged me.

It would be a long voyage, that was for sure. Weeks spent at sea, the ship being tossed and turned by waves, hours of back-breaking work, the captain barking orders, not nearly enough to eat. But it was all worth it in the end, if he finally got to see his family again.

They were both in cages. She was imprisoned by her father’s last wish, and he by a harsh and unforgiving law.

He was trapped in a cage of his own making. He longed to escape it, but couldn’t see how.

Every day, I sit at my window and look at the world outside. I long to be there, instead of in here. There’s so much out there, just waiting for me to discover it.

It was so easy to trick them. Play the part of the sweet, innocent girl, then quietly smile to yourself as soon as everyone else looked the other way.

“It’s all the fault of those damn executives. They’re the ones who cut our paychecks.”
“I know, And there’s not a damn thing we can do about it. That’s what really frustrates me.”

“You’ve been staring at her all morning.”
“You like her, don’t you?”
“Then why are you staring at her?”

The rules were simple. Get in, take what you can, get out again, and split it fairly. It wasn’t a life for everyone, of course. But who said there wasn’t honor among thieves?

He was a madman. Everyone said so.
What fools they were! How could they not see it was they who were mad?

Reducing a once intimidating villain to a shell of his former self is something I really hate.

He loved to intimidate people he didn’t like. There was something about seeing the shock, confusion, or fear on someone’s face that gave him a rush of satisfaction.
It was wrong, some part of him knew. But it felt so good.

She laughed and clinked her champagne glass against his. Neither of them noticed the dark figure sitting at a table in the back of the restaurant, watching them.
