Overabundance of anything in't nessicarily a bad thing. When one has an ample amount of food, it can usually lead to not starving, or giving someone your excess, and ending someone's hunger - at least for a little while. When a country had an overabundance of resources, they usually excell. Hooray!

How much is enough? To answer a question like that you would need to know what is being sought and why. Someone who is hungry just needs a good meal - an ample meal, if you will. All the food that they physically would be capable of eating would be too much. There'd be that whole Christmas-bloat feeling before too long. Similarly, too little food would not satisfy hunger. The word-concept of 'ample' encapsulates the notion that we need just what we require, whereas frequently we want more - or less - than is required.
