What are you doing? I’m trying out this gadget What does it do? It reads minds. For instance, it can tell what you are you thinking right now. That is impossible. Not only is it impossible, but it is a silly looking object, it was no doubt a rip-off, and it will be yet another thing that will sit on the bookshelf taking up space with my collection of cobalt blue glass and Murano glass, Amazing—you . . . you got almost everything I was thinking. How does it work? Well, are you sure you want to know? You of all people will be very disappointed. Yes! It doesn’t do anything at all. Since you are nothing but a part of my personality, it was easy to present a dialog with you from my imagination. All this is – is a satellite feed box for our television.

Andre had no idea she was following him, tagging along invisibly behind him and his friends, pretending not to be seen but quite apparent to all, like a rowboat in tow behind a larger ship, like a satellite moon chasing its planet, around and around the town they spun, the one and then the other, until just before midnight in the middle of the town square, he turned and bumped into her, unintentionally intentionally, gravity pulling them together like twin stars, and all she could say was, "Oh, it's you." He had nothing to say except, "No, it's you," and return to his urban orbit, unphased by the mathematical likelihood of such a cosmic run-in.

I looked up to the sky and thought I saw a shooting star. My cousin laughed. "Lauren," he started. "That's a satellite." I looked at him and frowned. Don't ruin my joy, I thought. I took a deep breath as I looked up again, I knew it wasn't a satellite. It was my uncle telling me from heaven that to wish is to dream and everything will be okay. I looked back at my cousin, "Your dad loves you." I walked back inside my house.

My mind was out there, roaming and wandering, but it always came back to one thing, like a satellite in orbit. That thought was there, the fact that I did not want to comprehend, that I did not want to realize it completely. For doing so would make it real, and I wanted to play make believe right now. Let's shut the real world out for a little bit longer, hit that snooze button, and just sleep on.

If Foreman goes back farther, he'll wind up in a ringside seat. What a beautiful swing, a punch that lifts George clean out of the ring. Foreman's still rising but the Ref wears a frown. For he can't start counting, until George comes down. Now, George disappears from view, the crowd is getting frantic. But our radar stations have picked him up, he's somewhere over the Atlantic. Who would have thought, when they came to the fight. That they would witness the launching, of a black satellite?«

"every day the satellite seems a little further out of reach." that's how the song "satellite" on Robyn hitchcock's "eye" cd starts. I listened to it a lot the summer of 1990, right before I started college. also listened to it a lot during that first year. There I was listening to lines about Monterey on another track, and then there I was in santa cruz, looking at the bay.

The satellite is a modern convenience, helping the communications of millions of people throughout the world-they hover above us unseen and unloved, distancing the earth in perpetual revolutions every second of every day. They fail us, sometimes, and when that happens all hell breaks loose. Just think, to call anyone on a cell phone you need a satellite, to read this page you need one, and to receive your email today the satellite will always be there. There is junk up there, and perhaps one day they will find all the missing parts to one satellite-drifting in space.
